SY 24-25 SciMaTech Leadership Applications

Welcome! Applications are due on May 3rd and positions will be announced on the 20th of May! We encourage everyone to apply for a position, it's a great way to get involved, boost your resume, fulfill an academy honors requirement, and gain new skills!

 

Don't see a position you're interested in? Write a proposal for an idea that would help support the academy and present it to Ms. McClure! New Ideas are welcomed and encouraged!

STEM-Wide Positions

Communications Director:

  • Grades: Current 10th-11th
  • Work with Ms. McClure on writing/posting weekly newsletter
  • Send Remind reminders on a weekly basis based on the events posted in the newsletter
  • Work with social media teams on ensuring they post at least 2-times a week per academy. 

Diversity Officers:

The goal of these positions is to create a foundation to allow for greater recruitment and retention of minority groups within the SciMaTech Academy, across all pathways. This position is separate from other specific pathway needs, and instead aims to increase cross collaboration and inclusive thinking across the academy as a whole. 
 

Racial Diversity Lead

  • Grades: Current 10th-11th
  • Lead monthly Diversity Listening Sessions 
  • Work with other officers to ensure best practice within their departments. 
  • Help recruiit a diverse set of volunteers for Academy Recruitment Events 
  • affinity events for members of the SciMaTech Academy. Work with parents and staff to ensure scheduling is correct, and everyone’s ideas are being listened to. 
  • Generate new ideas for initiatives to increase racial equality in STEM 
  • Focus on inter-grade and inter-program collaboration (IT, BioMed, Engineering, etc) 
  • Help lead design challenges (work with other diversity lead) 
  • Help plan and organize a family listening session

Gender Diversity Lead:

  • Grades: Current 10th-11th
  • Lead/work with leadership for GES monthly meetings  
  • Reach out to middle schoolers, increase recruitment, work with academy recruitment leads. 
  • Work with other officers to ensure best practice within their departments. 
  • Coordinate affinity events for members of the SciMaTech Academy. Work with parents and staff to ensure scheduling is correct, and everyone’s ideas are being listened to. 
  • Generate new ideas for initiatives to increase gender equality in STEM 
  • Focus on inter-grade and inter-program collaboration (IT, BioMed, Engineering, etc) 
  • Help lead design challenges (work with other diversity lead)

Biomed Positions

Officer Positions:

President

  • Grades: Current Sophomores or Juniors
  • Manage all sub-committees: Recruitment, Social media, Blood Drive Team (and meets weekly), overseeing their current projects and gathering information about what they are currently working on. They will then relay this information to Ms. McClure.  
  • Attends monthly STEM board meetings to relay information to the other academies.  
  • Represents the academy at any meetings with NAF, School, District officials 
  • Attend monthly student leadership academy council meetings 
  • Make themselves known to the biomed academy, present in classes 
  • Help lead Biomed Academy Townhalls 
  • Support with this summer’s Summer Bridge week 
  • Meet weekly with Ms. McClure to develop meeting agendas 

Vice President

  • Grades: Current Sophomores or Juniors
  • Assists the President and can help meet weekly with specific committees (retentions, WBL) 
  • Checks in with academy teachers regularly to check in on mentoring program 
  • Attends monthly STEM board meetings to relay information to the other academies.  
  • Attend monthly student leadership academy council meetings 
  • Represents the academy at any meetings with NAF officials  
  • Support with this summer’s Summer Bridge Week 
  • Meet weekly with Ms. McClure to develop meeting agendas 

Social Media Managers (3):

  • Grades: Current 9th-11th
  • Weekly meetings with Biomed President 
  • Pulls upcoming information/events from weekly newsletter, Reminds 
  • Post before an event/initiative comes up 
  • Post footage after an event 
  • At least two posts a week 
  • Arrange/assign biomed students participating in the event to take footage and send 
  • Monthly audience engagement polls/initiatives (ex. student shout outs, internship placements, college decisions) 
  •  Attend positions meetings to be aware of events happening and how they want to promote them; Clubs 

Recruitment:

Middle School Recruitment (2):

  • Grades: Current 9-11
  • Organizes a diverse committee of peers to help with Deal Middle School and Oyster Recruitment Events 
  • Develops and preps what activity will be conducted at the Biomed table during these fairs 
  • Help speak at High School Open House nights  
  • Meets bi-weekly with Biomed President 
  • Develop other creative ways to connect with 8th graders (ex. Clubs, science class push-ins) 
  • Towards the second semester connects with current 9th graders to understand how to better recruit middle school students

Underclassmen (9th grade) Recruitment (2):

  • Grades: Current 9-11
  • Support with Summer Bridge Week 
  • Organizes a diverse committee of peers to help with the 1st semester and then 2nd semester 9th grade advisory recruitment initiatives 
  • Recruits students to help with Back to School Night, NAF Night, and Engineering Expo 
  • Attend most event that the liaisons organize, fielding questions that students may have 
  • Meet weekly with Biomed President 

Retention:

Study Center Managers (2):

  • Grades: Current 9-11th or 10th-11th??
  • Works closely with Ms. Krafft and Ms. Dezenzo to know what big assignments/tests are coming up 
  • Arranges tutors to be available weekly during lunch for students who need support 
  • Arranges study groups and sessions for students to prep for upcoming tests in biomed. 
  • Tracks students attendance at session; tracks volunteer attendance (for community service hours) 
  • Has weekly meetings with Vice President 

Mentorship Program Organizers (2):

  • Grades: Current 10th-11th
  • Coordinate a committee of upperclassmen who want to serve as long-term mentors (mentoring is a requirement for honors graduation) 
  • Check in with Ms. Krafft and Ms. Dezenzo about upcoming assignments students may have trouble with 
  • Come up with a monthly theme for check ins, so not only based on work, but also social-emotional (finding way in the building, time management, study skills, getting involved in clubs, understanding academy requirements, etc) 
  • Develop a tracking system for mentors to track their outreach and connection with mentees 
  • Plan quarterly mentorship mixers 

Work Based Learning Managers (3):

  • Grades: Current 9th-11th
  • Works with Ms. McClure and Vice President to complete the coordinate plans. 
  • Team needs to plan at least 4 Biomed fieldtrips during the year 
  • Join planning meetings with Ms. McClure and potential new partners 
  • Recruit guest speakers that align with curriculum-- at least one per year, per course. 
  • Partner with Ms. Dezenzo and Ms. Krafft to brainstorm guest speakers aligned to the curriculum 
  • Meet guest speakers and guide them to their presenting room/help them get set up. 
  • Meet weekly with Vice President 

Data Mangers (2):

  • Meet with Ms. McClure on a weekly basis to update and enter WBL events in NAFtrack
  • Build Naviance communication lists  
  • Support with compiling student IDs of students who attend fieldtrips to get students excused 

Clubs:

HOSA/BioMed Club Leadership Roles:

Vice President: 

  • Organizes the community service outreach opportunities in this club 

HOSA Social Media:

  • Creates at least one post per weekly meeting, all community service events, and competitions 

Communications Officer: 

  • Create group chat and send out reminders, updates for the club and competitions 

Blood-Drive Team:

Head: 

  • Grades: Current 9th-11th
  • Organizes all Blood Drive logistics and other roles within the Blood Drive. 
  • Connects with Inova with Ms. McClure to schedule dates ( 2 per year) for the Blood Drive. This will include coordinating with the school to ensure the aux gym is available. 
  • Enters all the donors' information into the Inova system. 
  • Creates a sign up genius and google form to collect donors information (collaboration with promoter). 
  • Updates Ms. McClure and President frequently 

Promoter: 

  • Grades: Current 9th-11th
  • Promotes the Blood Drive through social media, a table in the atrium, posters, and any other methods that are effective. 
  • Recruits team members to help at the table or with other promotions, tracks their participation and sends records to Ms. McClure 

Engineering Positions

Officer Positions:

President

  • Grades: Current Sophomores or Juniors
  • Manage all sub-committees: Recruitment, Social media, work-based learning team (and meets weekly), overseeing their current projects and gathering information about what they are currently working on. They will then relay this information to Ms. McClure.

  • Check in with engineering academy teachers, see if they need anything, relay info to Ms. McClure 

Vice President

  • Grades: Current Sophomores or Juniors
  • Assists the President and can help meet weekly with specific committees (Retention, Clubs)
