Prinicipal’s Message: January 29, 2024

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

I hope this message finds you well. Last week, we completed the end of the first semester, and we are officially at the mid-point of the year. Many of our students participated in the support provided by our teachers, such as revision days and office hours.

I look forward to seeing their academic outcomes when grades are entered on February 5th. Revision days at Jackson-Reed resulted from our engagement last year as we developed a local school grading policy. DCPS is currently seeking feedback on the DCPS Secondary Grading Policy, and we encourage your participation in that process.

Term 3 starts tomorrow, and students should review their schedules in Aspen to see their new semester-long classes. Just like at the beginning of the year, students are expected to follow the schedule reflected in Aspen and attend the classes they have been scheduled into. Our Professional School Counselors have scheduled one-on-one sessions with our students and have scheduled students into courses needed to fulfill their graduation requirements. These meetings serve many functions, with the main one being to connect our students with a trusted adult in the building they can go to for support.

We know that students who have a trusted adult in the building are more connected to school and can better navigate their high school years. If students haven’t identified a trusted adult in the building, it’s not too late. This individual doesn’t need to be a counselor and can be any member of our Faculty and Staff, as we are all here to create a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment.
