Principal’s Update for June 18, 2023

We are heading into the last week of school, and this will be the final Weekly Note for SY23.

As you know, there were plenty of activities and events last week as we moved to close out the school year. Throughout the week, students presented their final projects during the Junior Symposium. This event requires students to engage in cross-curricular activities, and I want to thank their History and English teachers for the additional planning to make this event a success. While on academics, I attended a training for the Illustrative Math (IM) curriculum on Thursday. DCPS adopted this problem-based math curriculum to align with the Common Core State Standards to help reach all learners. Some of our Math teachers chose to introduce IM lessons this year, and we will implement the curriculum on a larger scale next year. Even with all these events, none was bigger than the prom!

Our prom took place at the Kennedy Center, and it was a night to remember. The venue had beautiful decorations, and our students represented our school and their families amazingly. I want to thank Tiara Pearson, Attendance Counselor, and all our volunteers, sponsors, and members of the prom planning committee for creating such a memorable night for our seniors. The class of 2023 will create more memories on Thursday morning when we celebrate their high school graduation!

As a reminder, there is no school on Monday as we celebrate Juneteenth. I also wish all our Tiger Dads a Happy Father’s Day! In closing, I thank each of you for partnering with me as I joined Jackson-Reed this year as Principal. Your support, feedback, and engagement helped make my transition into this school community enjoyable. We’ve accomplished a lot during the school year, and I look forward to all we will achieve as we build a school where everyone succeeds.
