  • Workshop Goals and Benefits
    • Empowering Students: The workshop aims to equip students with essential skills in environmental justice advocacy, community organizing, and engaging with governmental regulators. This empowers them to become effective advocates for their own communities and prepares them to become tomorrow's leaders.
    • Skill Development: Students will gain practical knowledge and hands-on experience in legal advocacy, legislative drafting, and public service commission engagement with the District's Office of the People's Counsel, the statutory legal advocate for all gas, electric, water, and telecommunications ratepayers.
    • Networking Opportunities: Participants will have the chance to connect with special guest teachers and leaders from the DC environmental and advocacy community, as well as other dedicated youth activists from all 8 Wards of the District, providing invaluable insights and mentorship opportunities.

  • Special Features
    • Guest Teachers and Speakers: The workshop will feature prominent figures in the environmental and advocacy community who will share their expertise and provide guidance on pathways into similar careers.
    • Certification: Each student will receive a certificate from OPC-DC upon completion of the workshop, recognizing their training in legal advocacy. This certificate can be included in college application materials, enhancing their academic and extracurricular profiles.

  • Engaging Activities
    • Community Organizing: Students will learn the fundamentals of identifying their community's environmental and climate change issues, and organizing community efforts - from grassroots mobilization to strategic planning taught by prominent community organizers in the District and outreach specialists at OPC.
    • Legislation Drafting and Passage: The workshop will provide an introduction to drafting legislation, understanding the legislative process, and strategies for successful advocacy taught by OPC attorneys and legislative experts.
    • PSC Engagement: Training from OPC attorneys will cover how to effectively engage with the Public Service Commission, ensuring that students understand the regulatory landscape and how to use collective power to influence policy decisions.
  • Outcome for Students
    • Leadership Skills: Students will develop leadership skills, and an advanced understanding of District governance, and leave equipped to advocate for themselves and their community before governmental bodies.
    • College Readiness: The skills learned and certification gained through the workshop will strengthen students' college applications and provide insight into potential career paths.
