NAF Academy: Engineering Expo Extravaganza

Our Jackson-Reed NAF Academy of Engineering is hosting our annual Engineering Expo Extravaganza the evening of Dec. 6th from 6:00pm-8:00pm. Please see below for more information as well as a link to register if you are available to support and please feel free circulate the registration link to your colleagues and contacts in the engineering world to sign up as judges!

Jackson-Reed High School hosts several career academies. One of the largest academies within the school is the NAF Academy of Engineering. In our efforts to ensure our engineering students are receiving a quality experience during their time in the academy, we want to build a culture of showcasing and celebrating student work with their families. But we also want students to stretch and grow their standards of practice through feedback and conversations with industry professionals.

This is where you come in! We are planning an engineering expo here at Jackson-Reed on December 8th from 6:00-8:00pm. During this time, students from each of our engineering academy courses will be sharing a project they have spent about a month working on, science-fair style. The classes representing will be our first-level course, Intro to Engineering; our second level course, Principles of Engineering; third-level courses, Digital Electronics and Aerospace; and our fourth-level course, Engineering Design and Development. We’ll want a variety of engineers to be assigned to different student projects, armed with rubrics provided by our teachers, to not only provide feedback to their projects, but also to give students an audience to practice their presentation skills and feel the support of the engineering community.

The second half of the evening will involve a chance for you to show off! Students and industry professionals will trade places and you will have the opportunity to set up the table with at least one interactive display, artifact, visual, and/or swag. We want students to walk away from your table with an understanding of your role as an engineer, a project that you have or are currently working on that you are excited about, and either a piece of career advice or ways that you can support their growth in the future (feedback on future projects, college/career advice, mentorship, internships, etc.).

The current schedule of the evening is as follows:

  • 6:00-6:30: Engineering judges/industry professionals receive instructions for the flow of judging/store their own materials and meet with academy staff
  • 6:00-6:30: Parents/community members check out student projects
  • 6:30-7:15: Judging /feedback begins!
  • 7:15-7:30: Transition to engineering tabling
  • 7:30-8:00: Industry professional tabling/student networking event

We’ll have judges virtual call in advance of the expo just to make sure the flow is clear and to make sure all questions are answered. If you are interested, please click here and Ms. McClure follow up!
