Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

It was an enjoyable start to the year welcoming our students back to campus this week.  Members of the staff and I had the pleasure of greeting our Tigers upon entry and seeing their smiling faces as they returned to school.  Student entry went smoothly, due to the staggered arrival and students accessing their schedules via Aspen – thank you for making these adjustments!

Our counselors are continuing to review schedule change requests that come in through the online form.  This process has been extremely efficient and students that would like to request a schedule change request, may do so until September 11th, 2023.  Please keep in mind that our counselors are working to honor as many requests as possible, and schedule requests may be denied.  Our counselors create student schedules based on seat and course availability with the main priority being scheduling students into courses needed for graduation.  While students await a response on their schedule change request, they must follow their assigned schedule in Aspen.

We are aware that during the first week, we had some very large classes, and our educators did a tremendous job teaching and instructing all students that reported to them.  We realize that very large classes are not ideal, and we are taking steps to address this concern.  These steps include rescheduling students into smaller sections of the same course, creating additional sections(s) of the same course, and creating additional courses that students can move into based on teacher availability.  These adjustments are being put in place for the second week of school and should enhance the learning experience for our students.

I’d like to thank our faculty, staff, students, families and community members for their dedication and support in making the first week of school a success. It’s an indication and reminder that together we can and will make the 2023-2024 school year a success!

NAF Night: September 26th, 5:30-7:30 pm

As many of you know, academies are an important part of Jackson-Reed's academic culture.  We boast of 10 academies, but we know that some of them have different designations.  Eight of them are CTE (Career-Technical Education) pathways. Seven are NAF (National Academy Foundation) Academies, and two are specific to Jackson-Reed. So many acronyms! So confusing, right?

To help ease the confusion and to celebrate being together for a new year, the NAF Academy team is going to host a NAF Night on September 26th from 5:00-7:30pm. Please save this date and time on your calendar. Our objective of the evening is to fill bellies with ice cream (and sorbet) sundaes, celebrate student work, and really outline what our academies are all about and how they will operate here at Jackson-Reed.

If your student is already in an academy, please come! If you are a 9th and 10th grade family who is considering an academy, please come! If you are an upperclassmen family who isn't in an academy, but have a child in middle school planning to attend Jackson-Reed, please come!

If you haven't RVSP'd yet for this event, please do so by Monday, September 22nd—this will help us plan accordingly.

You can RVSP here.
