Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

The school will be closed on Monday, May 27th, in honor of Memorial Day.  This holiday is when we can remember those who died in service to the United States within our armed forces.  Although many will spend this long weekend as the unofficial start to summer, let us not forget to take time and reflect on the sacrifices made by these fallen heroes.

As we close out this school year, this is the season for student celebrations and experiences that make high school great.  We have incredible events this week, such as International Night, ROAR Field Day, and the Senior Prom!  Our teachers and staff have been instrumental in these events, and I'm thankful for their support.

While these events are exciting and draw a lot of attention, it's crucial that we don't lose sight of our primary focus - the day-to-day teaching and learning of our students.  The school year is not over yet, and we want to ensure that our students continue to attend all their classes and actively engage in their coursework.  Regular attendance is a key factor in academic success, and we must not overlook its importance.  Please remember that as per the DCPS Attendance Policy, secondary students who accumulate more than 30 unexcused absences in any class will fail the class and be given the grade of FA (failure due to attendance).

If you have questions related to attendance, please feel free to contact the appropriate attendance counselor. We will gladly support you and your child(ren).

Have an enjoyable Holiday Weekend!

LSAT Interest for 2024-25 SY

The Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) advises the principal on the Comprehensive School Plan, the annual school budget, strategic priorities, curriculum, school culture, and family engagement. The LSAT may also advocate city-wide educational issues on behalf of Jackson-Reed. Participating in the LSAT is a great way to be involved with setting and monitoring school goals and priorities.

The LSAT is comprised of:
• four parent representatives elected by the parent body;
• four teachers;
• a Washington Teachers Union representative;
• a non-instructional school staff representative;
• a parent representing the PTSO;
• a student;
• and a community representative.

Parent representative candidates must be a parent or guardian of a currently enrolled student. The LSAT meets monthly. If you want to run for the SY24-25 team, please send a statement of interest and a short bio to jacksonreedlsat@gmail.com by June 3rd. Questions? Please feel free to contact Melody Molinoff at m.a.molinoff@gmail.com.

The New Thing Exhibit

In February 2024, for Black History Month, Jackson-Reed's Graphic Design Academy students collaborated with American University's Katzen Arts Center to exhibit photographs of the revolutionary community arts center in Adams-Morgan NEW THING. The PTSO at Jackson-Reed made this exhibit possible through funding, and now the exhibit is available on campus via the DC Humanities truck.

On Tuesday, May 28, students in DC History classes will have an opportunity to see a selection from the exhibit during an in-school field trip with several J-R students who were involved in serving as docents. On Wednesday, May 29th, the exhibit will be shared with students from School Without Walls
