Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

As we enter the month of May, a significant time for mental health awareness, I am grateful for the efforts of our Jackson-Reed Wellness Team in highlighting this crucial issue.  Our dedicated Psychologists, Social Workers, and School Counselors have been conducting various sessions throughout the year, both in groups and individually, to assist our students in coping with and addressing a range of issues, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, and grief.  If you feel your child(ren) could benefit from additional support, I encourage you to visit our website and complete an online referral. A member of our Wellness Team will be ready to provide the necessary support.

In addition to these school-based resources, DCPS has resources available at dcpsmentalhealth.org.  This website includes articles, strategies, and online events that address key items such as mental health, self-care, and student safety.  Some tips listed on the website to support mental health are:

  • Practicing mindfulness
  • Exercising regularly
  • Starting a hobby
  • Spending time with family and friends
  • Practicing gratitude

These tips help us build a safe, supportive, and welcoming community.

On Friday, May 17th, the Jackson-Reed JROTC Battalion conducted its annual end-of-the-year award ceremony.  It began by announcing this year’s six scholarship winners: cadets Jenna Boyd, Caleb Czwartacki, Thomas Diaz, Aiden Riley, Donovan Shook, and Miles Tinsler. The ceremony also recognized the cadets’ many accomplishments including a 1st place finish at the Dunbar Drill Competition, best Cyber Patriot Team in Washington, DC, 2nd second place finishes at the DCPS Archery Competition and the Eastern Raider Competition and winning the Commander’s Cup and the title of best JROTC program in DCPS for the second year in a row.

In addition, the battalion sent teams to the Regional Drill Competition at Winston-Salem, North Carolina, the National Raider Competition at Fort Knox, Kentucky and the National Drill Competition at Daytona, Florida for the first time.  The program also included alumnus 2LT Margaret Goletiani’s return as the guest speaker.  The event culminated with a change of command and the promotion of the new battalion command team including c/LTC Jaden Anthony-Jones, c/MAJ Victor Sorokin-Mobbs, c/MAJ Estrella Sorokina-Mobbs, c/MAJ Ammran “Jamie” Belete, and c/CSM John “Jack” Bernards.  A special thanks goes out to COL Compton, AP Bargeman, Ms. Lorenzo, Ms. Marshall, SFC Davis, SFC Sanders, the parents, and the cadets for making the event possible.  We wish all our departing seniors the best in their future endeavors as they continue to serve their community as better citizens and leaders.
