Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

I want to begin this week on a very rare topic—the solar eclipse. As you may know, between 2 pm and 4:30 pm on Monday, the DC area will experience a partial eclipse. We do not have plans for a schoolwide viewing and, therefore, do not anticipate this event significantly impacting our regular instructional program or dismissal procedures. Please reiterate to your child(ren) to use safe viewing practices if they view the eclipse and never look directly at the sun.

Enrollment season is in full swing, and we greatly appreciate all our families who have already reenrolled for the next school year. As a reminder, we want all our families to reenroll by May 1st! Your early action is crucial in making our planning for SY25 more accurate and efficient, especially for tasks such as master scheduling and grade-specific communication. Families can complete enrollment online; we're here to provide in-person support if needed.

As part of her Principal training program, Tomeka McKenzie, Resident Principal, will spend April 8th – May 3rd at another DCPS school to increase her professional learning. While she will still be available to interact with our community, Assistant Principal Ron Anthony will fulfill the day-to-day responsibilities of providing leadership to the 9th graders, and Assistant Principal Marc Minsker will support the History department.

Finally, during Spring Break, the main office will be open reduced hours from 9 am to 3 pm, and the Jackson-Reed eNews will not be sent on Sunday, April 14th. The next eNews will be sent on Sunday, April 21st.

Have a great week and a safe and enjoyable Spring Break.

Tigers R.O.A.R.,
Sah Brown
Principal

NCAA Recruiting Talk

Do your students have any questions about recruitment? Are your students interested in playing at the next level? Do you know anything about the NCAA Recruitment process? Jackson-Reed will be hosting a NCAA Recruiting Talk for all student-athletes on Monday April 8th at 2:30pm-3:30pm in the Auditorium. If your students are interested in learning more, please make sure they attend.

Student-Athletes will be allowed to leave class to attend the event at 2:30pm.

2024 AP Exam Administration

The 2024 AP exam administration will be held from Monday, May 6 through Friday, May 17. The AP exam schedule is set by College Board; see the full schedule here.
Students in AP courses should log into their College Board account and check under "My AP” to make sure that all of the AP courses they are enrolled in appear there.
Testing locations, arrival times, and school entrance to use will be announced in mid-April.

Requesting Late Testing

If a student has two AP exams on the same day or needs to request late-testing for another reason considered valid by College Board (see reasons here), they should come to see Ms. Levenson in the College and Career Center to change one of the exams to the late-testing administration, which will be held Wednesday, May 22 through Friday, May 24. See the late-testing schedule on the College Board website here.

AP Exams: Students with Accommodations

As messaged out in this newsletter in the fall, College Board’s deadline for requesting accommodations for AP exams was January 18, 2024.
If a student with accommodations wants to waive any of their accommodations, the parent/guardian must provide the request to waive in writing by emailing AP Coordinator Elizabeth Levenson, elizabeth.levenson@k12.dc.gov.

Looking for Additional AP Exam Proctors

Thank you very much to all those who have completed the interest form to be an AP exam proctor! Every AP proctor slot that is filled by a parent volunteer relieves a Jackson-Reed teacher or staff member of this duty, and we really appreciate it. Proctors hand out materials and monitor the exam rooms; training will be provided.

Youth and Government Legislative Weekend!

Last weekend, March 29-30, Jackson-Reed’s 2-year-old student group, Youth and Government, also known as YAG, participated in the YMCA’s annual Legislative Weekend at Judiciary Square in DC. During the conference, students proposed and defended bills, participated in press corps, and voted on legislation. 9 student club members attended the event, with 3 out of 4 of the proposed bills passing in committee. They were written by Caroline Downs, Lilly Klein, Emma Britton, and Jordana Sloane.

All three bills went to the final committee of the whole hearings and passed. They will now be reviewed by the DC City Council for further discussion and the possibility of being made into law in the District!
The J-R team swept in the awards ceremony, winning 9 awards in total. These included:
  • Caroline Downs receiving the Honesty award for her bill on decriminalizing sex work
  • Lilly Klein receiving the Emerging Leader award as a freshman
  • Avari Moore receiving the Outstanding Delegate in Press Corps award
  • Amari Patel was selected as the J-R delegate to attend the YMCA Youth Conference on National Affairs (CONA) this summer and Avari Moore was selected as an alternate
  • Lastly, Jackson-Reed won the Outstanding Delegation Award out of 11 delegations in total!
Congrats to the YAG members for such a successful weekend!
