Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

Although clocks moved forward an hour this weekend due to daylight savings, I hope everyone is having a restful weekend. Last week was an exciting week with the celebration of our winter sports teams, NAF Academy Quality Review sessions, and student recruitment at Oyster-Adams. I want to thank our Athletic department, coaches, NAF Directors, and students for their involvement in all these events.

We have a short school week due to the Family Conferences scheduled for Thursday and no school on Friday. I want to thank those family members who have signed up for conferences and those who reached out to teachers for information on the progress of their child(ren) if a conference slot was unavailable. Your partnership is invaluable, and we appreciate your support as we educate all learners.

Important Information for the 11th Grade SAT - Wed 3/13

Dear Class of 2025 Students & Families

Dear Class of 2025 Students & Families,

The spring SAT at Jackson-Reed HS is almost here! For the first time, students will be taking a digital SAT. It will be very similar to the digital PSAT they took in the Fall.

This Wednesday, 3/13, all juniors will take the SAT and will be excused from classes for the day. All students should report to the pool entrance beginning at 7:45am and no later than 8:30am.

Students will need to bring their fully charged laptop, their computer charger, their school ID, and a pencil for work on scrap paper plus any snacks or drinks they would like. Students who show up without a computer may not be able to take the SAT. We unfortunately will not be able to provide snacks. They will not need a calculator as there is a Desmos graphing calculator in the testing application. However, they are still welcome to bring their own calculator if they prefer. Scrap paper will be provided. Students will not be allowed to have any devices (including phones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, etc.) with them in the testing room or during breaks.

Once students clear security at the pool entrance, they will be required to turn off their cellphones and place their phone in the backpacks. All backpacks will be safely stored in the concessions hallway. It is recommended that students not bring sports gear and additional bags on testing day. After students have secured their phones and bags, they will enter the gym and check-in for the test. Students will then be assigned seating in either the auxiliary gym, the main gym, or a classroom depending on arrival time and accommodations status. Please note that only students who received approval from College Board will be afforded accommodations. The exam should start by 9:00am. No students will be permitted to enter the testing space once the doors to the gym have closed. Students who are late will be sent back to the main entrance and will go to their classes. Because we want everyone to test on Wednesday, please remind students to arrive between 7:45am and 8:30am in order to clear security and make it through the check-in process. Students with standard time are expected to finish the test around 11:45am and will be dismissed for the day after finishing the exam. Students with extended time will finish later in the day but will also be dismissed when they finish their exam. Students with extended time will also be afforded a "nutrition break" where they may eat a packed lunch.

In order to prepare for the digital administration, students should do two things: make sure the Bluebook app is downloaded and updated and create a College Board account.

The Bluebook app should be on all DCPS-issued devices. For students using a personal device, please download the app using these instructions (link to https://bluebook.collegeboard.org/students/download-bluebook). Students should open the app before test day to make sure it is updated.

Creating a College Board account allows our students to access their scores from College Board and allows them access to free practice tests. To create an account, please follow the steps found using this link. Once students have a College Board account, they can log into Bluebook to preview the testing interface and utilize practice tests.

AKIRA WILSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

In November 2022, our school community suffered the tragic loss of Akira Wilson. She was an Academy of Hospitality and Tourism senior who planned to attend college and study mortuary science. She was an integral part of our school, the class of 2023, and had a smile that brightened everyone's day.

In her honor this scholarship fund was created to assist future Academy students achieve their dreams of higher education.

FAFSA Information

Hello Class of 2024 students and families,

Create Your FSA IDs Now

Students and contributor(s) should create their FSA IDs at "StudentAid.gov" now. During the process of creating your FSA ID, there will be a waiting period of 1-3 days while your information is matched with the Social Security Administration. Create your FSA IDs now so you don't have to wait to submit your FAFSA when it opens (the opening date is still to be announced).

Here is the message you will receive after you create your account:

Your Account Was Successfully Created — What’s Next?

Before we can grant full account access, we must confirm that your name, Social Security number, and date of birth all match what is on record with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This process takes one to three days. If you verified your email address, you’ll receive an email once your information is matched with the SSA. You can still use your account while your information is being verified with the SSA.

- Determine contributors

- Student and contributor(s) create a StudentAid.gov account (FSA ID)

- Student and contributor(s) write down StudentAid.gov usernames/passwords, email addresses, Social Security Numbers (or alien registration number for non-citizens), and dates of birth (worksheet here)

- Student and contributor(s) locate 2022 Tax Returns

- Determine value of student/contributor assets:

Value of cash and savings/checking accounts

Amount of child support received in the past year

Net worth of investments

Net worth of any business/farms

- Compile list of any federal benefits received by anyone in the family

- Compile list of colleges to which the student is applying. The FAFSA has space for 20 colleges to be listed.

Class of 2026 Field Trip to U.S. Holocaust Museum

Beginning this Wednesday, March 6 and running through March 13th, our 10th grade English classes will be traveling to the U.S. Holocaust Museum at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Pl SW, adjacent to the National Mall. The entire Class of 2026 is afforded this opportunity in conjunction with their study of Night by Elie Wiesel and Maus by Art Spiegelman in their ELA classes.

Coach buses, generously provided by the museum, will leave Jackson-Reed at 9:20am each morning and transport students to and from the museum, with a return time of 12 noon. This means that students will have lunch once they return to the building. Field trip forms were distributed by English teachers last week and need to be returned this coming week. Jackson-Reed Ultimate Frisbee Annual Mulch Sale!

Please support the Jackson-Reed Tigers Ultimate Frisbee team through our annual spring mulch sale! We have two types of mulch and one soil conditioner -- order as much as your yard or garden needs! You can either pick up your order at National Presbyterian Church’s parking lot entrance on Van Ness Street on March 30th or some of our fabulous athletes will deliver your order to your yard for an extra fee. All orders must be received no later than March 23rd! Here is the link to order.

If you live out of the area or don't need mulch or soil conditioner, you can support the team by making a donation instead. Funds will help to cover the costs of tournaments, travel, and coaches, and to build up our financial aid funds to ensure that costs will not be a barrier to full participation by any student who wants to play. New Heights

New Heights Program for Expectant and Parenting Students at Jackson Reed

My name is Beth Perry and I am the New Heights coordinator for Jackson Reed. For those who do not know, New Heights is a DCPS program that works in all high schools, and lately some middle schools, to support student parents, both moms and dads, to stay in school, graduate, and gain parenting and child development skills. Another significant aspect of our work is to help students find childcare so they can return to school after giving birth. Working with our partners, we provide diapers and wipes (monthly), car seats, strollers, cribs, etc. We also hold workshops at the schools that not only focus on child development, but also post-graduation plans, how to be an advocate for you and your child, early childhood programs, and really any other topic the students are interested in. I coordinate with social workers, counselors and teachers at all my schools to create a community of support.

We accept donations in very good condition—especially baby clothes. We will begin our winter campaign to collect toiletries for our student parents. Besides the toiletries, the “bag” also includes books for the children. Next month I will make that information available for anyone who would like to help.

As a former Jackson Reed parent, and someone who had been working in the DCPS school system for over 10 years, I believe New Heights is an important program. I welcome any support and input. Please contact me if you have any questions. I can be reached at: beth.perry@k12.dc.gov

TigerTVLive is the YouTube channel that provides Free live coverage of athletic and other events at Jackson-Reed High School. We strive to provide live broadcast coverage of all home games. TigerTVLive broadcasts can be found by clicking here.

Jackson-Reed developed a relationship with the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Network that also broadcasts live and has Video On Demand (VOD). The NFHS Network Broadcasts all home games and games at participating NFHS schools. VOD memberships are free. Live view subscriptions are $11.99 a month or $79.99 annually.
