Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

2024 is moving, and we are already in February! As you may know, February is Black History Month, a time we celebrate and recognize African Americans' many contributions to society. Our festivities started last week, and I'd like to thank Black History Month committee members for planning these schoolwide activities.

This week, teachers will be finalizing Term 2 grades in the system. Once the DCPS central office verifies marks, you can view the Term 2 report card via the Aspen Parent Portal, and we will also be mailing report cards out using the address we have on file. We aim to have the report cards ready to mail by this Friday.

This week is also National School Counseling Week. We have an incredible group of Professional School Counselors who greatly support our students. Their planning, counseling, advising, and commitment help our Tigers earn their diploma and be better prepared for life after high school. They play such an important role here at Jackson-Reed, so please join me in thanking them for the work they do each day.

Term 2 ends on Friday, January 26th. All assignments and assessments must be completed by this day. Term 2 Report Cards will be available in ASPEN on Friday, February 9th.

FAFSA Information (NEW)

Hello Class of 2024 students and families,

Create Your FSA IDs Now

Students and contributor(s) should create their FSA IDs at "StudentAid.gov" now. During the process of creating your FSA ID, there will be a waiting period of 1-3 days while your information is matched with the Social Security Administration. Create your FSA IDs now so you don't have to wait to submit your FAFSA when it opens (the opening date is still to be announced).

Here is the message you will receive after you create your account:

Your Account Was Successfully Created — What’s Next?

Before we can grant full account access, we must confirm that your name, Social Security number, and date of birth all match what is on record with the Social Security Administration (SSA). This process takes one to three days. If you verified your email address, you’ll receive an email once your information is matched with the SSA. You can still use your account while your information is being verified with the SSA.

From DCPS College and Persists: “What to Prepare BEFORE the FAFSA Opens”

- Determine contributors

- Student and contributor(s) create a StudentAid.gov account (FSA ID)

- Student and contributor(s) write down StudentAid.gov usernames/passwords, email addresses, Social Security Numbers (or alien registration number for non-citizens), and dates of birth (worksheet here)

- Student and contributor(s) locate 2022 Tax Returns

- Determine value of student/contributor assets:

Value of cash and savings/checking accounts

Amount of child support received in the past year

Net worth of investments

Net worth of any business/farms

- Compile list of any federal benefits received by anyone in the family

- Compile list of colleges to which the student is applying. The FAFSA has space for 20 colleges to be listed.

Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation College Scholarship

Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation College Scholarship Application Deadline: Thursday, February 29, 2024

For more than 28 years, the FCBA Foundation has awarded scholarships of between $5,000 and $28,000 to deserving seniors at DC public high schools and charter schools. Last year, they distributed over $250,000 in scholarships to 24 DC high school seniors. Apprenticeships: Bricklayers Local 1 JATC

Bricklayers Local 1 JATC offers 3-year apprenticeships for the following trades: Bricklaying, Stone/Marble Masonry, Tile, Terrazzo, PCC, and Masonry Finishers. Apprentices are also provided with training in the following areas: OSHA 10/30, CPR/First-Aid, Flagger, GHS, Comet, Rigging and Signaling, and Scaffold Safety. Black History Month CIAA Field Trip

11th Grade SAT Accommodation Requests

The SAT School Day for 11th graders will take place on March 13, 2024. If your student has a 504 plan or IEP and does not already have College Board approval for their testing accommodations, please download and fill out this form to provide consent for the school to request accommodations from College Board. Completed forms should be emailed or submitted in person to Ms. Wells (katherine.wells@k12.dc.gov; Room 104j). Please make every effort to submit the form as soon as possible but no later than January 8, 2024 to allow enough time for College Board to make decisions regarding the request before the test.

Please note: if your student has already been approved for College Board accommodations, they do not need to resubmit a request. If you are not sure if your child has College Board approval, please reach out to Ms. Wells.

Students have their internship interviews the last two weeks of March and so we are going to use the first week of March (5,6,7) for our mock interview sessions.

Amazon Future Engineer - Scholarship America

The Amazon Future Engineer scholarship provides up to $40,000 for college, plus a guaranteed paid programming internship at Amazon.

Career Ready Internship application links are live now. For eligible academy students (current juniors, and seniors who haven't completed an internship yet), be sure to apply before the deadline of January 5th.

As an intern through CRI you can:

Gain real-world work experience completing industry specific projects/tasks
Earn $17 an hour, working up to 25 hours per week for six weeks in the summer (June 24th to August 2nd)
Receive professional mentorship and develop professional skills

There are several steps in this process and if you keep up with each step and their deadlines, you will have the best chance of earning a placement. Just a couple of initial items to note:

If students completed a CRI placement last summer, they. are not eligible for this summer.
Juniors get top priority for placement
Placements are not guaranteed, you are competing against NAF students from other schools in DC.
We do not have the list of host employers yet. We will hopefully receive them on February 20th for you to register for the interviews themselves.

For eligible students you should see a Tenacity course (self-paced professionalism course) populate on your Canvas in the next couple of weeks.

Semester 2 Schedule Change Request Process

Students must follow their schedule as noted in ASPEN.

Beginning January 29, 2024, students will have the opportunity to request schedule changes for Semester 2 course only using the Microsoft Form available here and the QR code posted throughout the building. The form will remain accessible until February 7, 2024.

Submission Guidelines:

• Only one request per student is allowed

• Carefully select your assigned school counselor when completing the form

• Ensure that all required sections on the Microsoft Form are completed before submission

• Once submitted, your school counselor will automatically receive your request. There is no need to email your request separately.

Important Note:Please note that schedule change requests may be subject to certain limitations, such as:

• Courses required for graduation

• Class sizes

• Non-lateral moves

• Failure to meet form selection requirements

If your request cannot be fulfilled for any of these reasons, you will not see a change reflected in your Aspen or Canvas accounts.

The Arts at Jackson-Reed

A WEEKEND WITH TOPPER CAREW CELEBRATING “THE NEW THING”

The founder of “The New Thing Topper Carew” (click to read more) will be in town for the opening of the photography exhibit as well as film programming at AFI Silver Theatre in Silver Spring. Jackson-Reed's NAF Academy students handled, scanned, and organized the historic prints of photographs, some 65 years old. Members of the Jackson-Reed planning committee then worked with parent Britt Oates (a curator) on layout, design, and accompanying text for the exhibit. Students will also be participating in the panel discussion at Katzen and the Q&A at AFI Silver Theatre.

New Heights

New Heights Program for Expectant and Parenting Students at Jackson Reed

My name is Beth Perry and I am the New Heights coordinator for Jackson Reed. For those who do not know, New Heights is a DCPS program that works in all high schools, and lately some middle schools, to support student parents, both moms and dads, to stay in school, graduate, and gain parenting and child development skills. Another significant aspect of our work is to help students find childcare so they can return to school after giving birth. Working with our partners, we provide diapers and wipes (monthly), car seats, strollers, cribs, etc. We also hold workshops at the schools that not only focus on child development, but also post-graduation plans, how to be an advocate for you and your child, early childhood programs, and really any other topic the students are interested in. I coordinate with social workers, counselors and teachers at all my schools to create a community of support.

We accept donations in very good condition—especially baby clothes. We will begin our winter campaign to collect toiletries for our student parents. Besides the toiletries, the “bag” also includes books for the children. Next month I will make that information available for anyone who would like to help.

As a former Jackson Reed parent, and someone who had been working in the DCPS school system for over 10 years, I believe New Heights is an important program. I welcome any support and input. Please contact me if you have any questions. I can be reached at: beth.perry@k12.dc.gov

TigerTVLive is the YouTube channel that provides Free live coverage of athletic and other events at Jackson-Reed High School. We strive to provide live broadcast coverage of all home games. TigerTVLive broadcasts can be found by clicking here.

Jackson-Reed developed a relationship with the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Network that also broadcasts live and has Video On Demand (VOD). The NFHS Network Broadcasts all home games and games at participating NFHS schools. VOD memberships are free. Live view subscriptions are $11.99 a month or $79.99 annually.
