Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

I hope you had an enjoyable holiday season with family and friends. As we reflect on the first half of the year and close out 2023, we have many things to be proud of:

  • In 2023, the number of students enrolled in AP courses increased by 20% (730 students in 2022 to 876 students in 2023)
  • 63.9% of students enrolled in AP courses scored a 3+ on the AP exam in 2023
  • Students have adopted our literacy focus of claim, evidence, and reasoning in all content areas
  • 94% of 9th graders are currently on track to promote
  • Increase in students feeling loved, challenged, and prepared via the Panorama Student Survey
  • An increase in our overall In Seat Attendance Rate
  • Enrollment has increased in CTE Academies overall
  • More students are completing CTE internships for post-secondary planning

As we move into the new year, we will continue to work towards meeting the needs of our students laid out in our Comprehensive School Plan with your continued support. Jackson-Reed is an incredible school community, and I look forward to continuing our shared work toward building the model urban high school in the United States.

A Message from Beth Perry of New Heights

Please help support the 4th Annual, New Heights Holiday Project, which provides hygiene products to new parents and books to their children.

As many of you know, New Heights is a DC Public Schools program that supports expectant and parenting students, moms, and dads, to have a healthy baby and graduate--plus, anything else that can come up along the way as they plan for their future and that of their children. I am the Jackson-Reed Coordinator, but also support 3 other schools. I started this project hoping for about 40-50 bags, but the support was incredible, and we were able to give one to each of the student moms and dads in the program. Our goal this year is to collect 200 bags which will allow us to give one to each of our current students and have one for new students throughout the year, as well as emergencies as they come up.

I am happy to share that last year, I had 12 students graduate from high school. Almost all are either working, going to college or a trade school or both.

Your support for this project is a way not only to provide a useful gift, but also to show how much we care and that we believe in our students. The bag includes shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, and a child’s book.

Here is the link to our Amazon “wish list” --PLEASE SHARE this link and information to other networks of support. The shipping address is “checked for you”.

We are living in very challenging times and there are many causes that need our support.  Any contribution will be very appreciated.  If you have any questions, please email me at Beth.perry@k12.dc.gov.

Thank you so much!

11th Grade SAT Accommodation Requests

The SAT School Day for 11th graders will take place on March 13, 2024. If your student has a 504 plan or IEP and does not already have College Board approval for their testing accommodations, please download and fill out this form to provide consent for the school to request accommodations from College Board. Completed forms should be emailed or submitted in person to Ms. Wells (katherine.wells@k12.dc.gov; Room 104j). Please make every effort to submit the form as soon as possible but no later than January 8, 2024 to allow enough time for College Board to make decisions regarding the request before the test.

Please note: if your student has already been approved for College Board accommodations, they do not need to resubmit a request. If you are not sure if your child has College Board approval, please reach out to Ms. Wells.
