Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

As the holidays approach, and there is a time for us all to reflect, I'd like to reaffirm Jackson-Reed's commitment to creating a safe and inclusive environment for students and staff. I understand that the evolving Israel/Hamas war continues to be top of mind for many of our school community members. The strength of our diversity has led to essential conversations over the past few weeks, detailed below under "Addressing Recent Concerns." As we continue to learn and grow collaboratively, I hope our collective wisdom will lead us all in a positive direction this new year.

Before the break, I want to highlight some of last week's events and reminders. Tuesday afternoon, our SGA concluded its donation drives and sent along all of the items donated by our Jackson-Reed school community. It was a true display of our R.O.A.R. values in action. Our Academy of Hospitality and Tourism (AOHT) also hosted its "Breakfast for Dinner" event on Thursday evening. AOHT students curated the entire experience in the atrium for their guests, who left full and happy! Student and family events like these are made possible with the support of our Jackson-Reed PTSO. Donating once or periodically throughout the school year supports several Jackson-Reed engagements that benefit the school community internally and externally. Click here to see more information on how to contribute to our PTSO.

The next eNews will be sent on Sunday, December 31. I wish you a restful and fulfilling holiday with those you love.

Tigers R.O.A.R,

Sah Brown

Principal

Addressing Recent Concerns: A Message from Principal Brown

I want to address recent concerns circulating in our community regarding an unsanctioned event organized by one of our school clubs. As soon as I became fully aware of the situation, I took immediate action, including removing flyers promoting this unsanctioned activity. I subsequently met with the club's sponsor and the students, discussed the proper process for event approval, and reiterated clear expectations for the club moving forward.

Unfortunately, following my interaction, a petition and other online communications emerged. I want to assure all members of our school community that we are actively addressing and responding to this situation. We have taken measures to halt the dissemination of these messages.

Also, these messages are not school-sponsored, including deceptive posts using the #JRHS. At Jackson-Reed, we are dedicated to cultivating a safe and inclusive environment. While we encourage students to form their own opinions and advocate for their beliefs, we will not tolerate messages of hate or division that aim to disrupt our inclusive community.

Your concerns are important to us, and we are committed to transparency and resolution. Please be assured that we are actively managing this situation and taking the necessary steps to maintain a positive and respectful school environment. One action we are taking is creating space for students to share their thoughts and hear multiple perspectives regarding recent events. The details of this facilitated discussion are still underway, and we plan to schedule it as soon as possible. Again, we appreciate your input and collective support during this time.

A Message from Beth Perry of New Heights

Please help support the 4th Annual, New Heights Holiday Project, which provides hygiene products to new parents and books to their children.

As many of you know, New Heights is a DC Public Schools program that supports expectant and parenting students, moms, and dads, to have a healthy baby and graduate--plus, anything else that can come up along the way as they plan for their future and that of their children. I am the Jackson-Reed Coordinator, but also support 3 other schools. I started this project hoping for about 40-50 bags, but the support was incredible, and we were able to give one to each of the student moms and dads in the program. Our goal this year is to collect 200 bags which will allow us to give one to each of our current students and have one for new students throughout the year, as well as emergencies as they come up.

I am happy to share that last year, I had 12 students graduate from high school. Almost all are either working, going to college or a trade school or both.

Your support for this project is a way not only to provide a useful gift, but also to show how much we care and that we believe in our students. The bag includes shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body wash, deodorant, toothpaste, and a child’s book.

Here is the link to our Amazon “wish list” --PLEASE SHARE this link and information to other networks of support. The shipping address is “checked for you”.

We are living in very challenging times and there are many causes that need our support.  Any contribution will be very appreciated.  If you have any questions, please email me at Beth.perry@k12.dc.gov.

Thank you so much!

NAF Resume Workshop

Jackson-Reed NAF Academies are going to host our 3-day resume workshop again this year on January 16, 17, 18 from 9:00 am -12:00pm. This event is for eligible students who applied for the summer Career Ready Internship for this summer. If you have professionals in your network who you think would be a great fit to volunteer and support our students with this, click here to access the landing page for all the information of how it will work and the sign-up link so we can plan accordingly. One of the academy directors will follow up with them after they register to get them plugged in! Please share this link far and wide—the more support/smaller groups for students, the better!
