Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

I hope your weekend was restful and restorative!

Last week was busy in the best way. We opened our doors to prospective students and families on Wednesday at our Open House event. Although about 200 participants registered for the event, we were amazed that more than double that amount showed up eager to learn more about Jackson-Reed's offerings and programs. Throughout the evening, our excellent NAF Academy of Hospitality students led tours across the building, answering questions and introducing our guests to several J-R staff. Open House participants also got a glimpse of the NAF Engineering Expo, where student work was on display and engineering partners provided feedback and expertise on their projects. The night was a huge success on many levels and another huge thank you to our NAF students for their leadership and ability to pivot as needed to meet the needs of our building guests. Please also join me in thanking Mr. Minsker, Assistant Principal, Ms. Clemmons, After School Coordinator, Ms. McClure, Ms. Lorenzo, and Mr. Wims, NAF Directors, and a host of teachers and support staff for coordinating and supporting two events simultaneously!

As we approach the middle of the month, our Student Government Association (SGA) is eager to support and bring the holiday spirit to two important organizations. The first is Colombia Heights Daycare Center, where SGA is requesting donations of toys for children ages 0-6. The other is the Harriet Tubman Women's Shelter, seeking warm clothing and hygiene products. The flyers below provide more details, and the donation deadline has been extended to Tuesday, Dec 12th.

Science Center

Do you need help with material for your core science class? If so, come by the science center! Jackson-Reed's Science Center meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:45-4:15 pm in Room 226. Stop by if you need help with concepts from class. Please note that if you need to make up a specific assignment, that should be done with your teacher of record during their office hours.

NAF Announcements

Monthly Diversity Listening Session: Every second Tuesday of the month in the library, we host a diversity listening session for our students of color in the STEM Academies. This series is led by our equity officers Keira Martin-Willis and Simone Forbes and is a space for student to come together, connect, and discuss aspects and strategies of how to improve, increase, and support diversity in the academy. National Society of Black Engineers: NBSE is meeting in Room 428 this week on Wednesday during lunch! Please note that this opportunity is also open to students of color in our IT and Biomed Academies! Please see Mr. Reeves or Ms. McClure if you are new to the club and are interested in joining! Hope to see you there—this session there will be a discussion about leadership positions, recruitment and discussing sessions for the second semester.

AOHT- Students hosted families and provided tours to over 400 middle school students and families!
AOHT-Students were able to network with other students and hospitality industry partners at JW Marriott!
AOHT- All level 1 and 2 students and families are invited 12/14 5:30-7pm
Graphic Design- Took a trip to Glenstone this past Thursday 12/7

The Amazon Future Engineer scholarship provides up to $40,000 for college, plus a guaranteed paid programming internship at Amazon.

David M. Rubenstein/Economic Club Scholarship

Application deadline: Wednesday, January 31, 2024

The David M. Rubenstein/Economic Club of Washington, DC Scholarship Program is one of the few large-scale scholarships dedicated exclusively to students graduating from DC public and charter schools. Approximately 50 scholarships of $20,000 are awarded each year to bright, motivated students who exhibit impressive academic achievement.

Career Ready Internship application links are live now. For eligible academy students (current juniors, and seniors who haven't completed an internship yet), be sure to apply before the deadline of January 5th.

As an intern through CRI you can:

Gain real-world work experience completing industry specific projects/tasks
Earn $17 an hour, working up to 25 hours per week for six weeks in the summer (June 24th to August 2nd)
Receive professional mentorship and develop professional skills

There are several steps in this process and if you keep up with each step and their deadlines, you will have the best chance of earning a placement. Just a couple of initial items to note:

If students completed a CRI placement last summer, they. are not eligible for this summer.
Juniors get top priority for placement
Placements are not guaranteed, you are competing against NAF students from other schools in DC.
We do not have the list of host employers yet. We will hopefully receive them on February 20th for you to register for the interviews themselves.

For eligible students you should see a Tenacity course (self-paced professionalism course) populate on your Canvas in the next couple of weeks.

NAF Volunteer Opportunities

Robotics First Tech Challenge Tournament volunteer opportunity for engineering, IT, Biomed:Our robotics team is hosting a regional robotics tourament on December 16th. We are expecting a large number of students from across the region to attend-we'll need a lot of student volunteer support to ensure the event is a success. We'll need help setting up the evening before—December 15th and all day on December 16th. This a great opportunity to rack up some community service hours in a meaningful way! Sign up here .

New Heights

New Heights Program for Expectant and Parenting Students at Jackson Reed

My name is Beth Perry and I am the New Heights coordinator for Jackson Reed. For those who do not know, New Heights is a DCPS program that works in all high schools, and lately some middle schools, to support student parents, both moms and dads, to stay in school, graduate, and gain parenting and child development skills. Another significant aspect of our work is to help students find childcare so they can return to school after giving birth. Working with our partners, we provide diapers and wipes (monthly), car seats, strollers, cribs, etc. We also hold workshops at the schools that not only focus on child development, but also post-graduation plans, how to be an advocate for you and your child, early childhood programs, and really any other topic the students are interested in. I coordinate with social workers, counselors and teachers at all my schools to create a community of support.

We accept donations in very good condition—especially baby clothes. We will begin our winter campaign to collect toiletries for our student parents. Besides the toiletries, the “bag” also includes books for the children. Next month I will make that information available for anyone who would like to help.

As a former Jackson Reed parent, and someone who had been working in the DCPS school system for over 10 years, I believe New Heights is an important program. I welcome any support and input. Please contact me if you have any questions. I can be reached at: beth.perry@k12.dc.gov

TigerTVLive is the YouTube channel that provides Free live coverage of athletic and other events at Jackson-Reed High School. We strive to provide live broadcast coverage of all home games. TigerTVLive broadcasts can be found by clicking here.

Jackson-Reed developed a relationship with the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Network that also broadcasts live and has Video On Demand (VOD). The NFHS Network Broadcasts all home games and games at participating NFHS schools. VOD memberships are free. Live view subscriptions are $11.99 a month or $79.99 annually.
