Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

Last week, students had a lot to celebrate! Several groups of students enjoyed some meaningful out-of-school time on field trips, visiting museums, attending expos, and visiting more college campuses! Moreover, on Thursday evening, our Athletic Department held the "Fall Sports Award Ceremony," which recognized students for their athleticism in soccer, football, field hockey, cross country, and volleyball. Coaches and families alike celebrated all their accomplishments and I’d like to thank Patrice Arrington, Athletic Director, for organizing this event.

This week, our "attitude of gratitude" continues! Our SGA is spreading this message with "Gratitude Grams," which we hope will encourage students to recognize individuals who have positively impacted their lives throughout the school building. We hope these small gestures of joy continue into your holiday weekend. Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, students will only have school on Monday and Tuesday and our main office will be closed Wednesday, November 22^nd through Friday, November 24^th .

We are grateful to have such a fantastic team of staff and families committed to our school community and students' educational success.

COVID Test Kit Distribution

Each student and staff will receive a COVID test kit from the warehouse. Students and staff are not being asked to share or upload negative results as these test kits are being provided as a public health resource.

Test kits will be distributed to 2nd-period classes on Monday and Tuesday, November 20^th and 21^st so that each student can receive 2 test kits.
Extra test kits will also be available at the Security Desk and the Main Office for those who didn’t receive a kit.
Test kits will not be available in the Nurse's Office per DCPS/DC Health guidelines.

NAF Engineering Expo Extravaganza

Do you need help with material for your core science class? If so, come by the science center! Jackson-Reed's Science Center meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:45-4:15 pm in Room 226. Stop by if you need help with concepts from class. Please note that if you need to make up a specific assignment, that should be done with your teacher of record during their office hours.

SAT and PSAT Scores Information

SAT scores and PSAT scores have been released for the October 11 and October 12 administrations! SAT scores (and any outstanding PSAT scores) should be released on November 16. Scores can be accessed by logging into your student’s College Board account at studentscores.collegeboard.org. Below are some resources for interpreting the scores and some troubleshooting tips if your student cannot find their score.

Can’t Find Your Student’s PSAT or SAT Score?

Many students are having trouble accessing their scores online because they either have multiple College Board accounts, entered an email address on their answer sheet that is not the one associated with their College Board account, or didn’t enter an email address on their answer sheet. To remedy this problem please try the below steps:

Contact Ms. Wells at Katherine.wells@k12.dc.gov to get your student’s score report emailed to you and your student’s SAT/PSAT Registration Number.
Contact College Board to get these scores linked to your student’s College Board account via one of the following ways:

March SAT for 11th Grade: Accommodation Requests

The SAT School Day for 11th graders will take place in March (exact date TBD). If your student has a 504 plan or IEP and does not already have College Board approval for their testing accommodations, please download and fill out this form to provide consent for the school to request accommodations from College Board. Completed forms should be emailed or submitted in person to Ms. Wells (katherine.wells@k12.dc.gov; Room 104j).

Please make every effort to submit the form as soon as possible but no later than January 8, 2024 to allow enough time for College Board to make decisions regarding the request before the test.

Please note: if your student has already been approved for College Board accommodations, they do not need to resubmit a request. If you are not sure if your child has College Board approval, please reach out to Ms. Wells.

Academy of Hospitality's "Breakfast for Dinner" Event

Anacostia Youth Media Festival

WHAT IS THE AYMF DOC PROGRAM?The Run, Hope, Work: Youth Media Collaboration project is a part of the Anacostia Youth Media Festival programming run out of the Community Voice Lab in the School of Communication at American University.Through project-based learning, we will produce short social media stories and a single short format documentary, training teenage youth to make thoughtful documentaries within their communities. Working alongside Professor Maher and Community Leads, the curriculum is split into three phases: (1) Training, (2) Production and Editing, and (3) Screenings.By the end of the program, youth will have learned key filmmaking skills in documentary production, including developing interview questions, story structure and organization, technical skills in editing, and impactful social media messaging and promotion.

Our client this year is Run Hope Work and we will be following their program of the course of the school year. https://runhopework.org/. All programming and production will occur in Wards 7 and 8.

Interested students can apply for the program here. Accepted students will be paid to work on the project and so they will learn how to create invoices, tabulate their hours, etc. Students will be working in collaboration with AU graduate and undergraduate students and receive professional credit for their contributions.

Thanks to your generous donations, PTSO was able enrich Jackson-Reed students and families in many ways this quarter, from hosting a conversation with the bestselling author of "Who Gets in and Why," to providing camera equipment for the school yearbook, transportation for the 9th Grade College Day of Exploration ... and much more.

We're continuing to work to meet our annual fundraising goal and depend on the support of our community so we can provide grants to students, teachers, and the school. New Heights

New Heights Program for Expectant and Parenting Students at Jackson Reed

My name is Beth Perry and I am the New Heights coordinator for Jackson Reed. For those who do not know, New Heights is a DCPS program that works in all high schools, and lately some middle schools, to support student parents, both moms and dads, to stay in school, graduate, and gain parenting and child development skills. Another significant aspect of our work is to help students find childcare so they can return to school after giving birth. Working with our partners, we provide diapers and wipes (monthly), car seats, strollers, cribs, etc. We also hold workshops at the schools that not only focus on child development, but also post-graduation plans, how to be an advocate for you and your child, early childhood programs, and really any other topic the students are interested in. I coordinate with social workers, counselors and teachers at all my schools to create a community of support.

We accept donations in very good condition—especially baby clothes. We will begin our winter campaign to collect toiletries for our student parents. Besides the toiletries, the “bag” also includes books for the children. Next month I will make that information available for anyone who would like to help.

As a former Jackson Reed parent, and someone who had been working in the DCPS school system for over 10 years, I believe New Heights is an important program. I welcome any support and input. Please contact me if you have any questions. I can be reached at: beth.perry@k12.dc.gov

This is a session where we have themes of discussion towards the betterment of the academies. Every month we have a theme, this months theme is Family. Biomed Field Trip to FBI Headquarters on November 13th:

Spots are currently filled for this fieldtrip! We are excited to take our first-level students to tour the headquarters of the FBI building here in Washington DC—students will learn about forensics, cybersecurity, casework, and the variety of jobs within the FBI.

GWU Urban Health Program Bi-weekly Series:For our biomed students, our partnership with George Washington University's Urban Health Projects returns!!! This is open to biomed students and counts toward the work-based learning requirements to graduate the academy. Please come to the college and career center during lunch on Wednesday, October 18th! They mission is to promote public health education. Their sessions include snacks and are highly engaging and interactive and run by graduate students. Less than a month away! Save the date! December 6^th from 6:00-8:00-Annual Engineering Expo Extravaganza: Come see our engineering students showcase their current class projects in this evening event where we welcome judges and community partners in the field of engineering to come judge and give feedback to our young engineers. For the second half of the evening, our judges and students trade places and our judges present their latest projects, research, and 'day in the life' and our students have the opportunity to network.

Families, we need your help! Calling all Engineers in your network! We are always looking for more judges to support this Expo especially since the size our engineering academy has blossomed and we want to make sure all of our students get feedback. TigerTVLive is the YouTube channel that provides Free live coverage of athletic and other events at Jackson-Reed High School. We strive to provide live broadcast coverage of all home games. TigerTVLive broadcasts can be found by clicking here.

Jackson-Reed developed a relationship with the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Network that also broadcasts live and has Video On Demand (VOD). The NFHS Network Broadcasts all home games and games at participating NFHS schools. VOD memberships are free. Live view subscriptions are $11.99 a month or $79.99 annually.
