Principal's Message

Greeting Jackson-Reed Community,

I hope you are enjoying the extended holiday weekend and recharging for the week ahead. The first week of October was a great start to the many activities and events we have taking place this month.

Last Thursday, College Awareness Month was launched by Mr. Wims, NAF Director, with an HBCU College Fair! Admissions representatives from over 15 Historically Black Colleges and Universities were in attendance and engaging Jackson-Reed Juniors and Seniors! Students left the event excited and informed about potential college pathways; some even received on-the-spot admission and scholarship dollars based on the work they’ve done during high school. Join me in thanking Mr. Wims for spearheading this event. We have more college-focused events taking place this week.

On Wednesday, October 11th, Seniors will take the paper version of the SAT, Sophomores, and Juniors will take the digital PSAT, and 9th Graders will be out of the building on a College Tour. Below is more detailed information regarding each cohort and their aligned college-focused activity. Then, on Thursday, October 12th, the College and Career Center will host two events in one evening. From 5:00–6:00 pm, we invite all Spanish-speaking families to attend a general information session on the college process. Following this session, we invite all families from 6:00–8:00 pm to the Atrium, for a College Fair with representatives from several local and out-of-state colleges and universities. Jackson-Reed Community, please support our Academy of Biomedical Science initiatives and EMBRACE "PINKTOBER" by wearing PINK every Friday in October to support AWARENESS and the FIGHT against breast cancer. Additionally, our HOSA/ Biomedical SciMaTech officers will be selling Breast Cancer buttons, wrist bands and other fun items to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Coalition (a local non-profit). THIS WEEK: PSAT and SAT School Day Announcements UPDATED

In in effort to prepare for college readiness, our students will be taking the PSAT and SAT this week. Due to some changes at the College Board level, this will look a little differently than it has in the past at Jackson-Reed. Please read the section below that pertains to your student’s grade level to understand what testing will look like for them.

Have a calculator at home that you no longer need? We'd love if you could donate it for our seniors taking the SAT on Wednesday, October 11th! All calculator types are accepted except if they have a raised screen or a qwerty keyboard. Please bring any donations to the main office and ask for Ms. Wells. Thank you!

Seniors (Class of 2024): SAT Paper Test

Seniors will be taking the SAT on paper on Wednesday, October 11.
Students will enter through the pool entrance and will be taking the tests in the aux gym, main gym, and some classrooms surrounding the gym area. They should have received their room assignments in classes on Friday. However, locations will also be posted at the school the morning of the test and will be available on students’ Canvas announcements.
Students should plan to arrive by 8am and be testing until about 1:00pm. Doors will open at 7:30am and close at 8:30am. Seniors who take the SAT will be dismissed from school after testing and will be excused from their afternoon classes.
Students should bring their school ID, at least one number 2 pencil, and a calculator plus any snacks or drinks (not full meals) they would like. Calculators are not required for the SAT, but many students prefer to have one. Please see this link for a list of approved calculators. Students will not be allowed to have any devices (including phones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, etc.) with them in the testing room or during breaks.

Juniors & Sophomores (Class of 2025 and 2026): PSAT Digital Test

Juniors and Sophomores will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 11.
Students will enter through the main entrance and will be taking the tests in classrooms. They should have received their room assignments in classes on Friday. However, locations will also be posted at the school the morning of the test and will be available on students’ Canvas announcements.
The PSAT is a digital test this year so students will need to bring their fully charged laptop, their computer charger, their school ID, and a pencil for work on scrap paper plus any snacks or drinks (not full meals) they would like. They will not need a calculator as there is a Desmos graphing calculator in the testing application. However, they are still welcome to bring their own calculator if they prefer. Scrap paper will be provided.
After testing, students will go to lunch and then their 3^rd and 4^th period A Day classes.
In order to prepare for the digital administration, students should do two things: make sure the Bluebook app is downloaded and updated and create a College Board account.
- The Bluebook app should be on all DCPS-issued devices. Students should open it before test day to make sure it is updated. For students using a personal device, please download the app using these instructions.
- Creating a College Board account allows our students to access their scores from College Board and allows them access to free practice tests. To create an account, please follow the steps found using this link. Once students have a College Board account, they can log into Bluebook to preview the testing interface and utilize practice tests.

Freshmen (Class of 2027): College Field Trips and PSAT Digital Test

Upcoming Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs): October 19th

Parent Teacher Conferences (PTCs) will be taking place VIRTUALLY on Thursday, October 19th from 12:00 pm -7:00 pm using the Microsoft Teams platform. As done in the past, families will receive an email with information on how to register and schedule conferences with your student's teacher/s. Families will be able to see the openings/availability of all teachers on one screen.

Emails with information on how to register for a Parent Teacher Conference (PTC) will be sent in two waves. This is to ensure ALL families get access to a conference. Please keep an eye on your email inboxes on the following dates.

Opportunities (NEW)

Anacostia Youth Media Festival

WHAT IS THE AYMF DOC PROGRAM?The Run, Hope, Work: Youth Media Collaboration project is a part of the Anacostia Youth Media Festival programming run out of the Community Voice Lab in the School of Communication at American University.Through project-based learning, we will produce short social media stories and a single short format documentary, training teenage youth to make thoughtful documentaries within their communities. Working alongside Professor Maher and Community Leads, the curriculum is split into three phases: (1) Training, (2) Production and Editing, and (3) Screenings.By the end of the program, youth will have learned key filmmaking skills in documentary production, including developing interview questions, story structure and organization, technical skills in editing, and impactful social media messaging and promotion.

Our client this year is Run Hope Work and we will be following their program of the course of the school year. https://runhopework.org/. All programming and production will occur in Wards 7 and 8.

Interested students can apply for the program here. Accepted students will be paid to work on the project and so they will learn how to create invoices, tabulate their hours, etc. Students will be working in collaboration with AU graduate and undergraduate students and receive professional credit for their contributions.

The Washington Youth Garden

The Washington Youth Garden (located on the grounds of the National Arboretum) is looking for participants in their upcoming Teen Volunteering Saturdays on October 14th and November 4th. These are opportunities for students to earn service hours by helping us at the WYG from 9am-12pm. They will get to learn about garden maintenance through planting, harvesting, weeding, etc. In addition to developing garden-based skills, they would also get to learn about our Green Ambassador Program (GAP), a 6 week paid summer internship for high school students that takes place at the Washington Youth Garden.

PTSO's First Community Event of the Year

The PTSO is thrilled to host author Jeff Silingo, bestselling author of Who Gets in and Why, all about the college admissions process. Join us Tuesday October 17 at 7 pm in the Jackson-Reed auditorium.

Events like this are made possible through your generous donations. We are excited to share that PTSO has reached a third of its fundraising goal of $150K for this school year and we are grateful for our generous community members.

PTSO (Jackson-Reed Parent Teacher Student Organization)

The Jackson-Reed Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) is seeking your support to help meet the needs and requests of our school community. Can you donate $1 per school day?

Your donation of $180 (equivalent to $1 per day in school) supports grants for teachers, administrators, staff, and student groups, as well as school-wide events such as monthly Principal Coffees. PTSO grants fund professional development for teachers, the Beacon student newsletter and other student clubs, backpacks of school supplies for English learners, art supplies, chemistry equipment, scholarships for seniors to cover graduation and prom fees and much more!

Gifts of any amount are appreciated. In school year 2022-23, the PTSO received about 600 donations from our student community of 2,000+. This year we would like some level of participation from all families. At Jackson-Reed, there is no auction gala or other formal fundraising event. We depend on our direct giving and appreciate your support.

UDC Perry Outreach Program

The Perry Outreach Program is a free, one-day, hands-on experience at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC) for female high school students in grades 10, 11, and 12 who are interested in pursuing careers in medicine and engineering. Students will hear from women leaders in these fields and try it for themselves by performing mock orthopedic surgeries and biomechanics experiments.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) is seeking high-achieving student leaders interested in a future related to government, history, and/or public service to participate in the 2024 United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP). High school juniors and seniors who will be serving in an elected or appointed position during the 2023-24 school year and who possess a strong interest in government, history, and causing a change in their community are encouraged to apply. U.S. Navy STEM Internships-Application deadline: November 1, 2023

The U.S. Navy’s Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program places high school students in Department of Navy laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for eight weeks during the summer. Seeking Volunteers for Ch/Art's Annual Art Walk!

Ch/Art is a local nonprofit arts organization that supports visual artists in Chevy Chase (DC and MD). Every year, Ch/Art holds an Art Walk where artists display their work at people’s homes. This year, it's scheduled for October 21-22, 2023, from 12-5pm.

We need 1-3 volunteers to take short videos (~1 min long; on your phone) at each house that’s represented in the Art Walk; there are 31 houses participating this year. These videos need to be posted on Ch/Art’s Instagram account.

We need volunteers at as many houses as possible during the Art Walk to welcome visitors, stamp their maps with the location, and offer drinks/food. Timeslots can be split (12- 2:30pm and 2:30-5pm) or you can stay for the full time (12-5pm). Please reach out to Anne Shields (ennashields@hotmail.com) if you would like to help!

HELP DESK NEEDS HELP

DCPS central office IT has been creating several fixes for issues that students and staff may have been experiencing the past week. To solve many of the network and keyboard problems you may have been having, please check for and install any updates that you can find.

Click on the magnifying glass and type “Updates”, click on “Check for Updates” and run any updates you that appear.
Additionally, click on the “Optional Updates” button. Devices should be plugged in with over 40% available on your battery.

If you continue to have challenges with your network connection or keyboard, stop by the Help Desk in the Atrium, before school, during lunch or after school. Remember, students should have their computer every day for every class.

Tiger TVLive: Please Subscribe & Like

TigerTVLive is the YouTube channel that provides Free live coverage of athletic and other events at Jackson-Reed High School. We strive to provide live broadcast coverage of all home games. TigerTVLive broadcasts can be found by clicking here.

Jackson-Reed developed a relationship with the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) Network that also broadcasts live and has Video On Demand (VOD). The NFHS Network Broadcasts all home games and games at participating NFHS schools. VOD memberships are free. Live view subscriptions are $11.99 a month or $79.99 annually.
