Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Community,

It was great to see everyone back to school last week, full of the excitement and anticipation that the new year brings.

I want to take time this week to share one of our school priorities – literacy. As you may recall, we identified written expression as our area of focus based on prior student performance. We know that writing helps to increase students’ understanding of the material and prepares them for college and career success. Members of our Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) selected the Claim-Evidence-Reasoning (CER) strategy to incorporate across all content areas, and I’m pleased to see the progress students are making. Compared to last year, our interim data in English has increased, and students are also performing better on most math standards overall. We attribute these gains to students answering more open-response items in multiple content areas.

This is impressive work, and I’m thankful to our educators who continue supporting student achievement through literacy and writing. Your involvement is critical to reinforcing student learning. We invite you to attend our Literacy Night on January 11th at 5:30 pm. This event will allow you to meet with staff, see what students have been learning, and engage in the CER process.

Wishing you a positive and productive week!

Completed forms should be emailed or submitted in person to Ms. Wells (katherine.wells@k12.dc.gov; Room 104j).
