Transitioning to Ninth Grade at Jackson-Reed
Moving to a high school setting challenges many students. A successful transition to a larger environment, more autonomy and academic choices can be intimidating. Don’t worry! At Jackson-Reed we approach the transition to high school as a process. Our approach is to see the transition to ninth grade as a year-long process.
The school year starts with an orientation for ninth grade and new students and parents, usually one or two weeks before the first day of school. The student sessions are done in small groups by last name and allow the students the opportunity to meet Jackson-Reed administrators and staff and familiarize themselves with the school building. A separate session is held for new parents.
Early in the school year, a student activity fair is held, and ninth graders are encouraged to get involved with one of the many clubs, activities, and sports available at Jackson-Reed .
9th Grade Course Selection Process
Congratulations on reaching this significant milestone as Rising Ninth Graders! Your journey to high school begins now, and it's an exciting time as you prepare for your Freshman Year at Jackson-Reed High School.
As you embark on this new chapter, it's essential to make informed decisions about your academic path. We strongly believe that parental involvement plays a crucial role in this process. Therefore, we're thrilled to announce that this year, as a parent, you'll have the opportunity to assist your child input their course selections with the guidance of our dedicated Jackson-Reed Counselors.
To facilitate this process, we will be conducting live mandatory Course Selection sessions where our counselors will provide students and parents with essential information to navigate the transition to high school successfully. These mandatory sessions will take place via TEAMS meetings. Parents and Students must attend one of the two sessions.
To ensure you make the most of these sessions, we kindly request that you review the information below as well as the Jackson-Reed Course Catalog and the Graduation Plan Worksheet.
After attending the Mandatory Course Selection Night and submitting your courses via ASPEN, please remember to turn in a hard copy of the Graduation Plan Worksheet signed by both student and parent to your homeroom and/or advisory teacher the following day. This hard copy serves as a backup to ensure the accuracy of your selected classes, especially given the new online registration system in DCPS.
Even if you do not have access to Aspen, your attendance at the Mandatory Course Selection Night is still mandatory as we will be sharing vital information for ALL Rising 9th Graders. We're excited to embark on this journey with you and your families. Together, we'll ensure that your high school experience at Jackson-Reed is fulfilling and sets you on the path to success.
