Premier Public High School

Since the school’s opening in 1936, Jackson-Reed High School has consistently been one of Washington D.C.’s premier public high schools, with a diverse student body from all over the city. Today the school remains committed to its mission: to build a safe, supportive, and welcoming community of dedicated and self-reflective learners, equipped to joyfully embrace opportunities for growth on the path of active citizenship.

Jackson-Reed offers something for every student, with many Honors and Advanced Placement classes, over 35 JV and varsity team sports for boys and girls, and more than 40 different clubs and activities. Jackson-Reed also has established seven different academies to help guide and focus students' specific academic interests.

Transitioning to Ninth Grade at Jackson-Reed

Moving to a high school setting challenges many students. A successful transition to a larger environment, more autonomy and academic choices can be intimidating. Don’t worry! At Jackson-Reed we approach the transition to high school as a process. Our approach is to see the transition to ninth grade as a year-long process.

The school year starts with an orientation for ninth grade and new students and parents, usually one or two weeks before the first day of school. The student sessions are done in small groups by last name and allow the students the opportunity to meet Jackson-Reed administrators and staff and familiarize themselves with the school building. A separate session is held for new parents.

Early in the school year, a student activity fair is held, and ninth graders are encouraged to get involved with one of the many clubs, activities, and sports available at Jackson-Reed .
