Students can only be withdrawn from DCPS upon request of the parent/guardian who enrolled the student. Email your request to Tasha Maritano to request the withdrawal form. Once you submit your completed withdrawal form to the new school and they return the form, your records will be sent directly to the school providing you do not have any outstanding book obligations and then your student will be officially withdrawn from our database.

For further information on the withdrawal process, feel free to reach out to Tasha Maritano

Student Education Records

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. For information about FERPA, visit the U.S. Department of Education website here.

Health Services

To attend Jackson-Reed High School, families are required to submit their student’s up-to-date immunization record by the first day of school. If you have not already submitted your child’s immunization records, here is what you need to do now:
  1. Make an appointment with your child’s doctor. DC offers resources to help you find a health provider if you do not have health insurance.
  2. Have the doctor complete DC’s Universal Health Certificate, available here. Your health provider may also provide a different proof of immunization document or an exemption explanation.
  3. Submit your immunization paperwork to the school nurse. You can also drop it off at school or call the school’s main office (202-282-0120) if you have questions about how to submit your form.

Visiting the Nurse’s Office - Room 103g

Students are encouraged to visit the nurse during non-class hours and are admitted to the nurse’s office during class only with a pass.
Our current school Nurse is Raquia Lawrence, SHT.

Pregnancy

Any student with a suspected or confirmed pregnancy should visit the school nurse as soon as possible.

Medication Policy

D.C. law prohibits students from bringing medication to school, including over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers. Medication will be confiscated by security if found in a student’s possession. A student who needs to take medication during school hours must provide the nurse with a form signed by both a physician and a parent or guardian (this form can be obtained in the nurse’s office). The nurse keeps the medication in her office and distributes according to the physician’s orders.
The nurse cannot dispense medication of any kind to students without the proper form signed by a physician and a parent or guardian. All medication must be supplied to the nurse in its original bottle.

Communication

This School Year

  • Look out for the weekly Jackson-Reed eNewsletter, sent on Sunday evenings (or holiday Mondays). The eNewsletter is emailed to the email address parents/guardians have on their student's enrollment form and in Aspen.
  • Visit the Jackson-Reed website. Our website is the most up-to-date source of news and announcements, information about upcoming events, important forms, and teacher and staff contact information.
  • Follow us on Instgaram: @jacksonreedtigers_official
  • Be alert for robocalls to your home that update your family about absences, school events, and policies.
  • Students: Listen to the announcements each day in the morning, before STEP, and at the end of the day to keep up with what is going on at school.

Contacting Teachers and Staff

The best way for students and parents to contact a teacher/staff is by email. Email addresses for teachers, administrators, and staff members are on the Jackson-Reed website under "All Staff".
Please allow teachers 48- hours to respond to your message. If you do not hear from a teacher within that time, resend the message and copy your student’s counselor, dean, and/or assistant principal. If you have not had the problem addressed within an additional twenty-four hours, please contact the counselor, dean, and/or assistant principal again.

Back-to-School Night

At Back-to-School Night, parents have the opportunity to meet their child’s teachers, receive a syllabus for each class, and learn how each teacher prefers to communicate. Parents are reminded that the purpose of this night is for all parents to meet teachers. If there are particular issues regarding your student’s performance in class, make an appointment to talk with the teacher directly by emailing the particular teacher and/or your student’s counselor.
Back to School Night will be Thursday, September 12, 2024.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Parent-Teacher Conference Days are scheduled to take place twice this school year. Parents and guardians will be able to sign up for a conference time with the teacher(s) they wish to meet with. This year, conferences will be held on these dates:

Thursday, October 10, 2024 and Thursday, March 13, 2025. If a parent or guardian would like a meeting with a teacher at a different time during the year, they should email the teacher.
