Principal's Message

Greetings Jackson-Reed Faculty, Staff, and Community,

Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! We hope you had an enjoyable summer and had a chance to relax and refresh while spending time with family and friends. I am excited to have our faculty and staff return on Monday, August 19th, as we prepare, and I look forward to the first day of school for students on August 26th.

We accomplished many incredible things during the school year 2023-2024, such as improved attendance rates, promotion rates, and writing across the curriculum. We intend to build on that momentum this year. We strive for excellence at Jackson-Reed, whether students are in the classroom, on the athletic field, completing an internship, or participating in an afterschool club.

To help our students succeed academically and prepare them for life after high school, we must all work together and live out our values of Respect, Ownership, Attendance, and Responsibility. I wish you all the best this school year has to offer, and thank you for joining us as we create the model urban high school in the United States.

Tigers R.O.A.R,
Sah Brown
Principal

Student Schedules and Schedule Change Requests

Student schedules will be available for parents/guardians and students to view in ASPEN on Monday, August 19.  Students should review their schedules and check for the following:

  • There is a scheduled class at all periods
  • There are no courses scheduled for which the student has already earned credit

Students may request a change in their schedule for the following reasons:

  • Student has already taken,  passed, AND earned credit for the course
  • Student needs the course for an Academy requirement
  • Student needs the course for a graduation requirement
  • Students in 9th grade may only make a schedule change request for elective courses

The schedule change request process is as follows:

  • Students must follow their given schedule until a change has been officially made by the School Counselor and is reflected in ASPEN
  • Schedule change requests will be accepted August 26th – September 9th.  After September 9th schedule changes requests will not be authorized.
  • To request a change, student must complete the online form Course Change Requests Form
  • Students will receive an email from their School Counselor indicating if they change has been accepted or denied.  If the School Counselor needs to meet with the student in person, they will schedule that meeting via email.
  • Students will only visit their School Counselor in person if they have an incomplete schedule or the School Counselor invites them to an in-person meeting

Staggered Start Times

To ensure a smooth start to the school year and help our newest students acclimate to the building, we will continue to implement a staggered arrival for our students.  On August 26th and August 27th, doors will open for 9th and 10th-grade students at 8:10 a.m., and they will report to first period.  Doors will open for 11th and 12th grade students at 9:35 a.m., and they will report to their second period.  Please note that 11th and 12th-grade students will be excused from their first-period classes on August 26th and 27th .

DCPS-issued Laptop Distribution

DCPS-issued laptop device distribution will take place within the upcoming weeks in preparation for the first day of school.

To ensure a smooth and efficient distribution process, we have organized the laptop distribution alphabetically by the last name of the student. We ask all 9th-grade families who have not picked up a device to come in during any other remaining days and times provided for other grade level cohorts.

We would also like to extend a warm invitation to both students and parents to collect their DCPS-issued device during the Grade-level Orientations. This will provide an excellent opportunity to not only receive the devices but also to get acquainted with the school environment, faculty, and fellow grade-level students.

Join Jackson-Reed Crew's novice squad - no experience needed!

Jackson-Reed Crew registration is now open for new athletes! NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED. Any Jackson-Reed High School student is invited to join.

The novice squad is open to any athlete, including those students with no previous rowing experience. Because rowing is not usually available until the high school level, freshmen, sophomores, or even juniors have a unique opportunity to learn and explore a new sport, starting on equal footing with their classmates and competitors. Over the course of the year, incoming student-athletes go from never having stepped into a boat to rowing at a very competitive level and are ready to join the varsity squad in their second year. Jackson-Reed Crew is the only public high school crew team in DC. The program can provide financial assistance so that no interested rower is prevented from participating due to financial barriers.

Interested in learning more? Complete our online form and you will be invited to an virtual information session on Thursday, September 5 at 8PM via zoom or visit www.jacksonreedcrew.org/novice to learn more about our program.
